Can't Help But Wonder... Are My Habits Working for Me, or Am I Just Working for Them?

Lately, my brain has been buzzing, even more than a Saturday night on Michigan Avenue. I've been asking myself the big questions. Not the "should I brave the Lakeshore Drive traffic for brunch?" kind of big questions (the answer is almost always yes, by the way), but the deeper, more introspective variety. Like, am I doing the things I want to do? Am I becoming the person I envision? And more importantly, is my daily routine more "organized chaos" than "intentional progress"?

Enter my current literary obsession: James Clear's Atomic Habits. And let me tell you, this book shifts my perspective more than a sudden gust off Lake Michigan.

You know how sometimes you pick up a self-help book, and within the first few pages, you can almost feel the author trying to strong-arm you into a new way of thinking? It’s like they're shouting instructions at you, leaving you feeling more overwhelmed than inspired. Well, this book? It's a conversation, a subtle suggestion, a quiet invitation to rethink everything you thought you knew about… well, everything.

What I'm loving about Atomic Habits is how effortlessly it gets you thinking. It doesn't scream "CHANGE YOUR LIFE NOW!" It just lays out these incredible insights, these brilliant little nuggets of wisdom, and suddenly, you're looking at your daily rituals, your little quirks, and seeing them in a whole new light. It's like the book plants a tiny seed of an idea, and before you know it, you’re convinced it was your brilliant thought all along. Pure genius, if you ask me.

It’s making me ponder all sorts of things. Like, what’s the "atomic habit" in my morning coffee ritual? Is it the precise temperature, the familiar weight of my favorite mug, or the sheer anticipation of that first rich sip? And how can I apply that same subtle magic to, say, finally tackling that overflowing inbox, or sticking to my intention of exploring more of the city's hidden gems?

The beauty of it is, it’s not about grand, sweeping overhauls. It’s about the tiny, almost imperceptible shifts that accumulate, like finding a great deal at a boutique you’d never noticed before. And that, in my opinion, is a concept I can absolutely get behind. Because isn't life, after all, just a series of small, interconnected choices? And if those choices are leading us towards our best selves, well, then that's a story I'm here for.

So, tell me, what small habits are you cultivating? And more importantly, are they leading you to your version of a well-lived life? Because I'm starting to think the secret to making progress might just be… in the details. The very, very small, atomic details.
